The Chicago White Sox have initiated several roster changes, placing catcher Joey Bart and left-handed pitcher Chris Murphy on the injured list. These adjustments were made just before their series opener against the Cleveland Guardians. Despite these personnel setbacks, the White Sox currently hold the top spot in the American League Central, maintaining a three-game lead over both the Guardians and the Minnesota Twins.
Catcher Joey Bart was moved to the 10-day injured list due to a fracture in his left (non-throwing) hand, specifically a fifth metacarpal injury. This occurred after he was struck by a pitch during Thursday's game in Boston. Bart, 29, recently joined the White Sox from Atlanta and had played in three games, recording no hits in six at-bats, with four strikeouts and one walk. His career spans seven years, including stints with the San Francisco Giants and Pittsburgh before his time with the Braves. Simultaneously, Chris Murphy was placed on the 15-day injured list for a left flexor strain. The 28-year-old reliever has posted a 3-0 record with one save and a 4.20 ERA across 29 appearances, including two starts this season. Murphy previously played for the Boston Red Sox in 2023 and 2025.
To compensate for these injuries, the White Sox have recalled catcher Edgar Quero and right-handed pitcher David Sandlin from their Triple-A affiliate, Charlotte. Quero appeared in 111 games for the White Sox last season, hitting .268 with five home runs and 36 RBIs. He was also part of the 2026 Opening Day roster, playing in 61 games where he recorded a .194 batting average, two home runs, and 16 RBIs. Sandlin, who made two previous appearances for Chicago in May and June, holds a 2-1 record with a 6.05 ERA in four games.
The proactive management of player injuries and strategic roster adjustments are crucial for any team's sustained success. By quickly bringing up promising talent from their minor league system, the White Sox demonstrate their commitment to depth and competitive readiness. This approach not only addresses immediate needs but also fosters an environment where players can step up and contribute, reflecting resilience and a strong team spirit.
