Chris MacFarland Recognized as a Top General Manager in NHL Awards

Chris MacFarland, the recently appointed President of Hockey Operations and General Manager for the Nashville Predators, achieved a notable second-place finish in the prestigious Jim Gregory General Manager of the Year Award. This recognition highlights his exceptional contributions during his tenure with the Colorado Avalanche, where his leadership facilitated significant team successes, including a Presidents' Trophy victory and a deep playoff run.

The announcement came on June 26, 2026, during the annual NHL draft. MacFarland's remarkable performance with the Avalanche from 2022 to 2026 positioned him as a strong contender for the esteemed award. Just weeks prior, on June 2, he transitioned to his new role with the Nashville Predators, succeeding Barry Trotz, marking a new chapter in his distinguished career.

The Jim Gregory Award is decided by a diverse panel comprising 42 members, including NHL general managers, various league executives, and media representatives. This comprehensive voting process ensures that the recipient is highly regarded across the hockey landscape for their strategic vision and operational excellence. MacFarland's strong showing underscores his widespread respect within the sport.

During the 2025-26 season, under MacFarland's guidance, the Colorado Avalanche compiled an outstanding record of 55 wins, 16 losses, and 11 overtime losses, accumulating 121 points. This stellar performance earned them the Presidents' Trophy, an achievement marking the fourth time in the franchise's history. The team's consistent excellence also led to their ninth consecutive playoff appearance, culminating in a spot in the Western Conference final for the second time in five seasons.

MacFarland's strategic prowess was particularly evident in his management of player acquisitions and roster development. His adept navigation of free agency and the trade deadline played a crucial role in bolstering the Avalanche's strength. Key moves included retaining Brock Nelson, a significant trade acquisition, and signing veteran defenseman Brent Burns as a free agent. Furthermore, his efforts at the trade deadline brought in critical talent such as Nazem Kadri, Brett Kulak, Nicolas Roy, and Nick Blankenberg, all of whom contributed to the team's success.

Despite MacFarland's impressive year, the award was ultimately claimed by Bill Guerin, the General Manager of the Minnesota Wild, who received 131 votes. MacFarland followed closely with 123 votes, illustrating the narrow margin and the highly competitive nature of the recognition. Pat Verbeek of the Anaheim Ducks secured third place with 29 votes. This marked MacFarland's inaugural nomination as a finalist for the Jim Gregory Award, a significant milestone in his career. It is also noteworthy that Joe Sakic, the current President of Hockey Operations for the Colorado Avalanche, had previously won the award during the 2021-22 season.
