The Cincinnati Reds have announced that their left-handed starter, Brandon Williamson, has been moved to the 15-day injured list, experiencing fatigue in his left shoulder. This decision followed an MRI examination which, thankfully, revealed no significant structural damage to the joint. The team plans for Williamson to undergo a specialized shoulder program designed to enhance his range of motion and overall strength, aiming for a full recovery.
Williamson's recent performance on the mound saw him exit a game against the Colorado Rockies after just three innings, during which he conceded four runs on four hits, alongside four walks and four strikeouts. This marks another setback for the 28-year-old pitcher, who had previously missed the entire 2024 season recovering from left elbow surgery. His return to the lineup this spring was a pleasant surprise, especially after fellow left-hander Nick Lodolo was sidelined with a blister issue, but the current shoulder problem highlights the challenges of managing pitcher health.
Manager Terry Francona commented on the situation, acknowledging that while Williamson pitched exceptionally well during spring training, the team had anticipated potential hurdles given his recent injury history and the demands of a regular season rotation. The Reds' pitching staff has been under considerable strain, with key players like Hunter Greene and Nick Lodolo also out of action. Despite these challenges, the team has managed to achieve an impressive 19-11 record, marking their best 30-game start since 2006.
Looking ahead, Hunter Greene has commenced throwing and is expected to rejoin the team in July. Nick Lodolo is projected to need one more rehabilitation start before being activated. In response to Williamson's injury, right-hander Zach Maxwell has been called up from Triple-A to provide depth. Francona underscored the dynamic nature of their roster, stating, "We've got a lot of moving parts," as the team navigates through its pitching woes.
The Reds continue to manage a fluid pitching roster, balancing recovery timelines with on-field performance. The focus remains on rehabilitating key players like Williamson while integrating new talent to maintain their competitive edge in the league.
