Cincinnati Reds pitcher Hunter Greene is confronting a significant setback in his career, with a nagging elbow injury threatening to sideline him for the entirety of the current baseball season. The team's management has expressed little optimism regarding his potential return to the mound this year, emphasizing the seriousness of his condition.
The announcement came from Reds manager Terry Francona, who, on Greene's 27th birthday, disclosed that the right-handed pitcher has a "slim chance" of recovering in time to rejoin the active roster. Greene was recently placed on the 15-day injured list following a recurrence of soreness in his right elbow. This latest development follows an earlier surgical procedure Greene underwent at the end of March to address bone chips in the same elbow, which delayed his season debut until July 4.
Francona further elaborated to FOX19 Cincinnati, stating that the team is awaiting additional medical opinions to gain a clearer understanding of the injury's extent and the optimal recovery path. Greene's season has been marred by these physical challenges, impacting his performance significantly. In his last appearance on July 31, he pitched six innings against the Pittsburgh Pirates, giving up four runs on seven hits and two walks, along with four strikeouts, in a game the Reds ultimately won 8-7.
Throughout his limited five starts this season, Greene has recorded a 2-2 win-loss record, alongside a high 6.83 ERA, accumulating nine walks and 33 strikeouts over 27 and two-thirds innings. His professional career, which began after being drafted second overall by Cincinnati in the 2017 MLB Draft, has seen him achieve a 27-31 record with a 3.82 ERA and 650 strikeouts across 523 and one-third innings over 96 starts since 2022. Notably, he was an All-Star in 2024 but also missed almost three months of the 2025 season due to a strained right groin, highlighting a history of injuries that have hampered his consistency.
