Veteran football strategist Claude Le Roy, at 78 years old, has been officially named the new head coach for the Republic of Congo's national team. The announcement, made by the Congolese Football Federation on Monday, outlines his immediate goal: to steer the 'Red Devils' towards qualification for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations. This appointment signifies his re-entry into the head coaching arena, following his departure from Togo in 2021.
Le Roy's extensive career has seen him manage numerous African national teams, including two stints with both Cameroon and DR Congo, as well as Senegal, Ghana, and Togo. This upcoming period marks his second time at the helm for Congo, having previously coached them from 2013 to 2015. During his initial tenure, affectionately known as the "White Wizard" by fans, he led the 'Red Devils' to the quarter-finals of the 2015 AFCON, a significant achievement that was their best performance in the competition since 1974. Le Roy's illustrious career includes a triumph at the 1998 AFCON with Cameroon. He shares the distinction of being among the oldest active international coaches, with Dick Advocaat, currently coaching Curacao, being slightly older.
The coaching staff will also see former Senegal international defender Omar Daf joining as Le Roy's assistant. Congo's national team is focused on securing its first AFCON qualification since 2015, having missed the last five tournaments. Their path to the 2027 competition, which is set to be hosted by Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda, will involve navigating a challenging qualifying group that includes formidable opponents such as Cameroon, Comoros, and Namibia.
The re-appointment of Claude Le Roy brings a wave of optimism and strategic expertise to Congolese football. His rich experience and proven track record in African football are invaluable assets. This move underscores a commitment to elevate the team's performance, nurture new talent, and inspire a new generation of players and fans, fostering a brighter future for the sport in Congo.
