Charleston Southern's head football coach, Gabe Giardina, recently expressed high admiration for Savannah Christian alumnus Harry "Zo" Smalls during a media briefing. This commendation came during a Zoom call with reporters as the team prepared for their inaugural home game against Point University.
Smalls transitioned to Charleston Southern after his initial year at Savannah State. The 5-foot-10 running back currently holds the second position on the team's depth chart, closely following Dwayne Wright. This season, Smalls has accumulated 79 rushing yards on 24 carries, placing him second in both categories for the team. Notably, last week, Smalls secured his inaugural career touchdown, contributing to CSU's 26-20 victory over the Citadel.
Coach Giardina conveyed particular appreciation for the redshirt freshman, especially considering his recovery from a torn ACL that sidelined him last season. Giardina remarked on Smalls' complete return to health, noting that his physical prowess makes it hard to believe he ever suffered such an injury, particularly highlighting his powerful lower body for a freshman. Charleston Southern is set to compete against Point University at Buccaneer Stadium on Saturday at 6 p.m.
The journey of athletes like Harry "Zo" Smalls exemplifies the profound impact of perseverance and dedication. Overcoming significant obstacles, such as an ACL tear, to return to peak performance is not merely a testament to physical resilience but also to an unyielding spirit. Such stories inspire us to confront our own challenges with courage and determination, reminding us that with hard work and a positive outlook, remarkable achievements are always within reach.
