Continuity and New Talent Drive Arizona Football's 2026 Season Aspirations

After a demanding 2024 season, Arizona's football program underwent a significant overhaul, primarily through transfers, to rejuvenate its roster under coach Brent Brennan's leadership. Initially, the team's depth chart reflected a heavy reliance on new additions, with 15 newcomers earning starting or co-starting roles, and 10 of them seeing action in the first game. This shift underscored a period of substantial change and adaptation for the team.

A year later, the landscape has notably transformed, signaling a move towards stability and experience. The recently released season-opening depth chart for the 2026 season reveals that out of 23 offensive and defensive starters or co-starters, a mere five are new faces. This marks a profound change from the previous year, as 18 players from the successful 2025 squad, which achieved a 9-4 record, are slated to start against NAU. Headlining these returners are quarterback Noah Fifita, poised for his 35th consecutive start, Alexander Doost, making his 23rd consecutive start, and linebacker Taye Brown, starting his 19th game in a row. Other experienced players like wide receiver Chris Hunter III, defensive end Tre Smith, and linebacker Chase Kennedy also bring significant career starts to the team. The integration of only a few new starters, including center Zach Henning, tight end Cole Rusk, linebacker Cooper Blomstrom, and cornerbacks Dwight Bootle II and Malcolm Hartzog Jr., indicates a strategic blend of maintaining a strong core while selectively enhancing the squad. Furthermore, the special teams unit sees the most changes, with nearly all projected starters, except kicker Michael Salgado-Medina, being new to the program, including punter Chase Ridley and long snapper Drew Nicolson.

This deliberate blend of seasoned talent and strategic new acquisitions reflects a clear vision for the program's future, built on the foundation of continuity and measured growth. The emphasis on retaining key players and fostering a positive team environment speaks volumes about the program's health and its commitment to long-term success. It suggests a belief in the established roster and a focused approach to filling specific needs with impactful new talent, setting the stage for an exciting and potentially rewarding season.
