Such a profound connection was vividly displayed by Cranston Western Little League's Aubrey Riker, the formidable pitcher, and Mila Castillo, her steadfast catcher. Their combined prowess and unwavering trust were instrumental in leading their team to victory in the Rhode Island Little League Softball championship, culminating in their advancement to the New England Regionals.
The journey to the regional tournament was marked by a grueling doubleheader on Tuesday, July 14th. In the initial contest against Cumberland, Riker's dominant pitching, supported by Castillo's strategic pitch-calling, resulted in a commanding 10-0 shutout victory, concluded early by the mercy rule. Riker allowed merely three hits while striking out eight over four innings, a testament to their synchronized performance. Castillo's insight into Riker's emotional state on the mound, knowing precisely when to offer words of encouragement, underscored their dynamic partnership, which she described as years in the making.
Beyond their defensive contributions, both athletes also excelled offensively. Castillo delivered two two-RBI singles in the first game, showcased her speed with two stolen bases, and even attempted a third. Riker contributed with a hit, an RBI, and two runs. Manager Bobby Arrighie lauded Castillo's all-around performance, highlighting her intelligence on the bases and her excellent game management for Riker. He expressed immense pride in the entire team's effort and spirit.
The second and decisive game, which determined their progression to the East Regionals, again saw Riker and Castillo shine. Riker pitched a complete game, fanning seven batters and conceding only one unearned run on six hits. While Castillo went hitless, Riker added another RBI with a hit. The collective offensive strength of their teammates secured a 6-1 victory and the state title. Castillo expressed immense joy at continuing to play with her long-standing teammates for one final season.
This triumph marked Cranston Western's fourth consecutive win after an initial setback to Cumberland in the first round, which relegated them to the loser’s bracket. With a first-round bye, they are set to commence their regional campaign on Sunday at 7 p.m., facing either Vermont or New Hampshire. The team is also hosting a fundraiser to help cover the costs associated with travel, accommodation, and uniforms for the upcoming regional challenge.
