Cubs Send Pitcher Matthew Boyd to Injured List with Biceps Strain

The Chicago Cubs have announced a roster change, placing southpaw pitcher Matthew Boyd on the 15-day injured list due to a biceps issue. In response to this development, the team has called up right-handed hurler Javier Assad from their Triple-A affiliate in Iowa. Boyd, who is 35 years old, has recorded a 1-1 record with an earned run average of 6.75 across two starts for the Cubs this season. He also made a relief appearance for the United States during the World Baseball Classic, where he allowed three runs over two and a third innings. Despite the injury, it is not considered to be severe, as Boyd was able to participate in a side session just prior to the announcement.

Boyd's extensive career includes an All-Star selection in 2025 with Chicago and a cumulative record of 61-78 with a 4.59 ERA over 215 appearances, including 201 starts. His journey has taken him through several major league teams, such as the Toronto Blue Jays, Detroit Tigers, Seattle Mariners, and Cleveland Guardians. Meanwhile, Assad is slated to take the mound for the Cubs' upcoming game on Tuesday against the Tampa Bay Rays. He has yet to record a decision in two starts with Iowa, posting a 9.00 ERA, and previously had a 0-1 record with a 4.50 ERA in two starts for Mexico in the World Baseball Classic. Over his four seasons with the Cubs, Assad holds an 18-12 record with a 3.43 ERA in 78 outings, 54 of which were starts.

This roster adjustment underscores the dynamic nature of professional baseball, where injuries can quickly shift team strategies and provide opportunities for other players. The resilience and adaptability demonstrated by athletes like Boyd and Assad, who navigate both challenges and new roles, serve as a testament to their dedication to the sport. It's a reminder that every setback can pave the way for a comeback, and new talent is always ready to step up and contribute to the team's success.
