Decatur Seahawks' Impressive Season Ends in State Championship Defeat

The Stephen Decatur baseball team concluded a standout season, culminating in a narrow 2-1 defeat against the Sherwood Warriors in the MPSSAA Class 3A State Championship on Monday, May 25. The Seahawks entered the championship match at Ripken Stadium with an unblemished record, eager to claim their inaugural state title for the 2026 season. However, they faced a formidable opponent in Sherwood, a team renowned for its consistent success, having clinched four state championships in the preceding five seasons.

Decatur initiated the scoring, taking an early 1-0 lead in the first inning, thanks to an RBI from Brandon Nadeau. Seahawks' pitcher Kyle Springle delivered a stellar performance, keeping Sherwood scoreless through the initial three innings. Nevertheless, the tide turned in the fourth inning when Sherwood managed to tie the game with an infield single, subsequently taking the lead after a wild pitch allowed a runner to score. This crucial play secured Sherwood a 2-1 advantage, a score that remained unchanged through the rest of the game.

Despite the championship loss, the Decatur team celebrated an outstanding 2026 season. They concluded the year with only one defeat, proudly earning both a Bayside Championship and a regional title.
