Detroit Tigers Face Setback as Key Outfielder Heads to Injured List
Outfielder Kerry Carpenter's Unfortunate Collision Leads to Shoulder Sprain
Detroit Tigers outfielder Kerry Carpenter has been sidelined with a left shoulder sprain, an injury he incurred during an intense play against the Kansas City Royals. The incident took place on Saturday night when Carpenter crashed into the right field sidewall while attempting to make a play on Bobby Witt Jr.'s inside-the-park home run. This unfortunate collision has led to his placement on the 10-day injured list.
Roster Adjustments: Gage Workman Called Up, Justin Verlander Transferred
In response to Carpenter's injury, the Tigers have made several roster adjustments. Third baseman Gage Workman has been brought up from Triple-A Toledo to join the main squad. Additionally, to create space on the 40-man roster, right-handed pitcher Justin Verlander, who is recovering from left hip inflammation, has been moved from the 15-day to the 60-day injured list. Verlander is anticipated to return to play by May 31.
Carpenter's On-Field Performance and Injury Details
Despite the severity of the collision, Carpenter, 28, initially remained in the game after Witt's first-inning homer, eventually exiting two innings later due to the sprained AC joint in his shoulder. Manager A.J. Hinch confirmed on Sunday that while initial tests revealed no structural damage, Carpenter is experiencing significant inflammation and soreness. This season, Carpenter has been batting .216, contributing six home runs and 17 RBIs over 37 games. This isn't his first shoulder issue, as he also sustained a right shoulder sprain in 2023.
Career Highlights and Manager's Outlook on Carpenter's Recovery
Throughout his career, Carpenter boasts a .264 batting average, with 76 home runs and 210 RBIs across 403 regular-season games since his MLB debut in 2022. He has also demonstrated strong postseason performance, hitting .275 with three home runs and 10 RBIs in 15 playoff appearances. Manager Hinch expressed optimism about Carpenter's return, stating that his recovery could be swift, depending on how quickly the inflammation subsides and he regains his full swing. In the interim, the team will need to collectively step up their game.
Gage Workman's Journey to the Major Leagues
Gage Workman, 26, a fourth-round pick in the 2020 MLB Draft out of Arizona State, where he played alongside current Tigers first baseman Spencer Torkelson, has been consistently performing well. After a brief stint as a Rule 5 Draft pick in 2025 with the Chicago Cubs and White Sox, he returned to the Tigers organization. At Triple-A Toledo, Workman has been exceptional, batting .358 with four homers, 28 RBIs, 15 doubles, a .413 on-base percentage, and a .590 slugging percentage. Hinch praised Workman's consistent performance and defensive improvements, emphasizing that he has rightfully earned this call-up opportunity.
