Diamondbacks Aim to Replicate Dominance Against Reds

The Arizona Diamondbacks, fresh off a commanding 9-0 triumph over the Cincinnati Reds, are poised to extend their winning momentum as they prepare for the second game of their weekend series in Phoenix. This upcoming encounter will once again feature a pitching duel between Arizona's Michael Soroka and Cincinnati's Rhett Lowder, both of whom previously showcased impressive form in their last head-to-head.

Their previous matchup on June 13 in Cincinnati saw both right-handers deliver strong outings, though neither secured a win in the Reds' narrow 2-1 victory, which was ultimately decided by Noelvi Marte's eighth-inning solo home run. Soroka, boasting an 8-3 record with a 2.93 ERA, delivered arguably his best performance of the season in that game, conceding only one run on two hits over seven innings, striking out seven batters without issuing a walk.

Lowder (4-8, 5.17 ERA) also performed admirably in their initial meeting, allowing a single run across 5 2/3 innings. His recent performances have shown significant improvement, marked by a 1-1 record and a 3.72 ERA over his last five starts, including quality starts against the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Athletics. Lowder attributes his success to a strategic approach, emphasizing early discomfort for hitters and a versatile four-pitch mix, featuring two fastballs, a slider, and a changeup.

The Diamondbacks' recent dominant win on Friday was highlighted by Jordan Lawlar, who, in his fourth game back from a two-month stint on the injured list due to a right hamstring injury, blasted a two-run homer and achieved personal bests with three hits and three RBIs. This victory was a much-needed boost for the team, which has faced challenges, including an incident involving second baseman Ketel Marte's absence and subsequent placement on the injured list.

Arizona manager Torey Lovullo described the shutout as a significant statement, reflecting the team's resilience in navigating difficulties. He emphasized the team's culture of adjustment, adaptation, and collective performance. Currently, the Diamondbacks (68-61) are just one game behind the San Diego Padres (69-60) for the third National League wild-card spot, with both teams trailing the Philadelphia Phillies (71-58) for the second wild-card position. Lawlar, who had struggled with five strikeouts in 10 at-bats during the Boston series, remains focused on his role, asserting that players drown out external pressures and concentrate on their performance on the field. Soroka has also demonstrated solid form since returning from a glute injury, allowing only two runs in two starts, including a no-decision in their recent 5-3 loss to the Atlanta Braves. Historically, Soroka holds a 1-2 record with a 3.12 ERA against the Reds over six career appearances, while Lowder's only previous encounter with the Diamondbacks was against Soroka on June 13. The Reds, who suffered their 13th shutout loss on Friday, also saw left fielder Michael Toglia exit the game with a dislocated right shoulder sustained during a diving catch in the first inning.

Following their impressive win, the Arizona Diamondbacks are keen to maintain their competitive edge against the Cincinnati Reds. With key players returning to form and a renewed team spirit, the Diamondbacks are strategically positioned to make further inroads in the National League standings, showcasing their ability to overcome adversity and perform as a unified squad.
