Novak Djokovic, the tennis icon, has humorously reflected on a series of defeats against Jannik Sinner at Wimbledon, suggesting his own advice might have inadvertently fueled Sinner's ascendancy on the grass courts. Following his semifinal exit in the 2026 Wimbledon Championships, Djokovic’s candid remarks offer a blend of self-deprecating humor and insight into the competitive world of professional tennis, while also acknowledging the physical demands of his illustrious career.
After experiencing another setback in the Wimbledon semifinals against Jannik Sinner, losing in straight sets (6-4, 6-4, 6-4), the esteemed 24-time Grand Slam champion journeyed to New York for the premiere of his documentary, "Novak Djokovic: The Wolf in Winter." During his time in Manhattan, he also participated in the Fanatics Fest, where he was seen alongside prominent figures like Lionel Messi, Tom Brady, Kevin Durant, and Justin Bieber, among others.
During an interview segment for Kevin Hart's "Cold as Balls" with SNL's Marcello Hernandez, conducted while submerged in an ice bath, Djokovic playfully recounted his 2023 Wimbledon semifinal victory over Sinner (6-3, 6-4, 7-6(4)). He divulged that he had generously offered detailed tactical advice to the Italian player following that encounter. Djokovic lightheartedly expressed that his guidance had seemingly backfired, as Sinner subsequently bested him in successive Wimbledon semifinals in 2025 and 2026. He humorously misstated it as three consecutive years of defeats.
Djokovic further elaborated on his recent loss to Sinner during an appearance on "CBS Mornings," where he admitted that his physical condition wasn't optimal for their semifinal match. This was due to an arduous five-hour and fifteen-minute battle against Felix Auger-Aliassime in the quarterfinals. While emphatically stating that he wasn't diminishing Sinner's well-deserved triumph, the 39-year-old athlete candidly acknowledged the considerable strain on his body. He remarked that the body's response changes with age and prolonged elite competition, and he was simply unable to fully recuperate for the semifinals, thus not achieving his desired freshness. He underscored that while Sinner's victory was undeniable, the demands of the sport are evolving for him.
After a period of much-needed rest, both Novak Djokovic and Jannik Sinner are set to return to the competitive circuit at the Canadian Open, commencing on August 2nd. This ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Montreal will also feature an array of other top talents, including Alexander Zverev, Ben Shelton, Taylor Fritz, Felix Auger-Aliassime, and Daniil Medvedev.
