Ensworth Boys' Lacrosse Achieves Historic State Championship Victory

The Ensworth boys' lacrosse squad recently completed an extraordinary journey, transforming from a team with a dismal 1-14 record two years prior to ultimately securing the TSSAA Division II Class A state championship. This remarkable ascent culminated in a decisive 17-5 triumph over Knoxville Webb, largely propelled by the exceptional offensive contributions of junior attacker Cooper Rice and sophomore midfielder Whitmer Jones, each netting five goals. The victory not only signifies a monumental achievement for the team but also underscores the profound impact of strategic coaching and unwavering player commitment.

On May 16, at Centennial High School in Franklin, the Tigers showcased their dominance in the TSSAA Division II Class A boys lacrosse state championship. Cooper Rice, a junior attacker, and Whitmer Jones, a sophomore midfielder, were the standout performers, each tallying an impressive five goals against Knoxville Webb. Following their commanding 17-5 win, Rice reflected on the team's incredible evolution, noting the pivotal role of their dedicated coaching staff in steering them from past struggles to present glory. His personal contribution extended beyond goals, as he also provided four assists and executed six steals without any turnovers, highlighting his comprehensive influence on the field. The feeling of achieving such a turnaround was described by Rice as 'surreal' and 'wonderful'.

Adding to the celebratory atmosphere for the Ensworth athletic program, the girls' lacrosse team also captured a state championship on the same day. This dual victory created an exhilarating environment, with coaches on the boys' sideline receiving real-time updates on the girls' progress while their own championship game unfolded. The boys' team finished their season with an impressive 16-3 record, a testament to their consistent performance and improvement throughout the year.

Whitmer Jones's offensive burst was particularly notable during the championship game, as he scored three consecutive goals in the first half. Beyond his scoring prowess, Jones's all-around game was evident through his four steals and four blocked shots, demonstrating his defensive capabilities, all achieved without a single turnover. He attributed much of the team's success to Coach Parker Ferrigan, praising the rigorous discipline and preparation that spanned two years leading up to this championship moment. Other significant contributions came from sophomore attacker Casey Nuchow, who recorded three goals and an assist, and single goals from freshman midfielder Jet O'Rear and sophomore attacker Thomas Deleot. Knoxville Webb's efforts were led by Adam Weston, who scored two goals in the contest.

The Ensworth Tigers' journey from a challenging season to a state championship is a testament to resilience, strategic development, and the cohesive effort of both players and coaching staff. The profound transformation witnessed over two years, culminating in a dominant performance in the championship final, not only brought a title to the school but also created a memorable moment of dual championship success for both the boys' and girls' lacrosse programs. This victory underscores the power of perseverance and effective leadership in overcoming adversity.
