The WNBA's two newest teams, the Toronto Tempo and Portland Fire, find themselves in a challenging period, both grappling with extended losing streaks as they approach their upcoming second encounter of the season. The Tempo have faced a particularly tough stretch, dropping seven consecutive games and losing 11 of their last 12 outings. Similarly, the Portland Fire are contending with a five-game slide. Their previous matchup saw Portland secure a dominant 99-80 victory, highlighting the difficulties Toronto has faced this season. This rematch offers both franchises a critical chance to reverse their fortunes and inject some much-needed confidence into their campaigns.
The Portland Fire's recent performance has been marred by defensive vulnerabilities, particularly evident during their current five-game losing streak. In four of these five losses, the Fire conceded 100 or more points, with the fifth game seeing them allow 98 points. Their struggle on defense was starkly illustrated in their recent 106-101 defeat to the Los Angeles Sparks. Despite these team-wide issues, Bridget Carleton has been a standout performer for Portland, consistently delivering impressive individual efforts. In her last two contests, Carleton matched her career-best with seven 3-pointers in each game. Her scoring prowess also shone through as she equaled her career high of 26 points against the Indiana Fever and followed up with 24 points against the Sparks. Carleton is currently enjoying a career-best season, averaging 14.4 points per game, and her 84 successful three-point shots mark the second-highest tally in her eight-year career, surpassing her 91 threes with the Minnesota Lynx in 2024.
Portland coach Alex Sarama has emphasized the team's strategy to maximize Carleton's impact, stating, "When BC has a good matchup, we want her to be more deceptive with how she's manipulating the ball and changing speeds." He further elaborated on the need for her to create greater advantages, saying, "So if she doesn't have the pull-up 3, how can she create a bigger advantage and get to the rim and maybe not have that defender in front of her?" This highlights the Fire's attempt to diversify their offensive schemes around Carleton's scoring ability.
Meanwhile, the Toronto Tempo (10-20) are also in a slump, currently 0-2 on a five-game road trip. Their recent losses include a 17-point defeat to the Golden State Valkyries on Sunday and an 11-point loss on Tuesday, extending their current losing streak to seven games. Over this losing stretch, Toronto has been defeated by an average margin of 18.4 points, underscoring their struggles on both ends of the court. A key player for the Tempo, Marina Mabrey, missed Sunday's game due to a neck injury and only managed 12 points on 4-of-11 shooting in Tuesday's game, significantly impacting the team's offense, as she averages a team-high 20.6 points.
In Tuesday's game, despite Nyara Sabally contributing 21 points for the Tempo, the team's performance was hampered by 16 turnovers, which led to 27 points for Golden State. Additionally, the Tempo were outworked on the offensive boards, losing the rebounding battle by a 15-5 margin. Toronto coach Sandy Brondello pointed to these critical areas for improvement, stating, "I think it's pretty easy, look at the stats: Turnovers and offensive rebounds." She added, "They lifted their intensity and that disrupted us a little bit. We got to be a bit tougher." The team also saw the debut of recently acquired Aneesah Morrow, who contributed eight points and five rebounds in 16 minutes off the bench. Brondello expressed optimism about Morrow's future contributions, noting, "The more and more comfortable she gets, she'll get better and better. I like the minutes she gave us and we'll continue to build on that."
Both expansion teams are navigating difficult periods, with the Toronto Tempo battling a seven-game skid and the Portland Fire experiencing five consecutive losses. The upcoming match provides a crucial opportunity for either team to break their losing spell and rebuild momentum as they continue to develop within the league.
