Franco Baresi: A Symbol of Dedication and Excellence
A Career Defined by Loyalty and Triumphs
Franco Baresi dedicated his entire two-decade professional career to AC Milan, from 1977 until his retirement in 1997. During this illustrious period, he captained the team for an impressive 15 seasons, leading them to significant victories including six Serie A titles and three European Cups/Champions Leagues. His commitment to the club was unparalleled, making him a true one-club man.
The Maestro of Defense: On and Off the Field
Widely recognized as one of the finest defenders in football history, Baresi was the cornerstone of AC Milan's formidable defense, often alongside greats such as Paolo Maldini, Alessandro Costacurta, and Mauro Tassotti. He made a staggering 719 appearances and scored 33 goals for the club, showcasing not only his defensive prowess but also his ability to contribute offensively. His influence extended beyond the field, as he became honorary vice-president of AC Milan in 2020, and the club retired his iconic number six shirt four years later, a testament to his immense impact.
International Acclaim and World Cup Journey
Baresi's talent was also celebrated on the international stage, earning 81 caps for Italy. He was a vital part of the squad that clinched the 1982 World Cup. His resilience was particularly evident in the 1994 World Cup final, where he returned from a knee injury to face Brazil. Despite a heroic effort in nullifying the threats of Romario and Bebeto in a goalless draw, Italy ultimately lost the final in a penalty shootout, with Baresi unfortunately missing the first spot-kick.
A Legacy Etched in Club History
Beyond his numerous Serie A and European triumphs, Baresi also led AC Milan to victory in four Supercoppa Italianas, two European Super Cups, and two Intercontinental Cups. His passing follows a battle with illness, having undergone surgery in August 2025 to remove a lung nodule. His last public appearance was at the Winter Olympics opening ceremony at San Siro Stadium in February.
AC Milan's Heartfelt Tribute
AC Milan expressed their profound grief, stating that Baresi's "example and integrity will be forever etched into the club's DNA, just as his iconic number 6 shirt is." The club emphasized that the memory of Franco will continue to guide and inspire them, affirming that "Baresi is forever."
