Skating's Elite Set for Grand Prix Season Comeback!
Anticipated Returns: Liu and Malinin Lead the Charge at Skate America
Olympic gold medalist Alysa Liu and reigning world champion Ilia Malinin are poised to make their grand return to high-level figure skating competition. Their first major event of the season will be Skate America, scheduled to take place in Everett, Washington, from November 13-15. This marks a significant moment for both athletes, signaling their re-entry into the demanding Grand Prix circuit.
Grand Prix Series Structure and Qualification Pathway
The International Skating Union (ISU) has unveiled the full lineup for the upcoming Grand Prix season. Skaters are eligible to participate in two out of the six Grand Prix events, with the ultimate goal of qualifying for the prestigious finals held in Chongqing, China, in December. This structured format ensures a competitive season leading to a climactic conclusion.
High Stakes and Fierce Competition at Skate America
Skate America is expected to feature a star-studded roster. Alysa Liu and U.S. champion Amber Glenn will face formidable opponents, including Japan's Olympic bronze medalist Ami Nakai and Belgium's world bronze medalist Nina Pinzarrone. In the men's event, Ilia Malinin will contend with seasoned American skater Jason Brown and Italy's Daniel Grassl, promising an exhilarating showcase of talent.
Alysa Liu's Hiatus and Malinin's World Title Defense
There is speculation regarding whether Liu, Glenn, and Malinin will partake in any Challenger Series events prior to Skate America. Alysa Liu has not competed since her Olympic victory in February, opting to skip the subsequent World Championships where Kaori Sakamoto secured her fourth title. Ilia Malinin, however, successfully defended his world title in March, rebounding from a challenging free skate performance at the Olympics.
Subsequent Grand Prix Assignments for Key Skaters
Following Skate America, Alysa Liu is slated to compete in her second Grand Prix event, the Finlandia Trophy, just one week later. Ilia Malinin's subsequent assignment will be the NHK Trophy in Japan, where he will compete against world bronze medalist Shun Sato. Kazakhstan's Olympic gold medalist Mikhail Shaidorov will commence his Grand Prix season at the event in France from October 23-25, before heading to the Cup of China in November.
Notable Absences and Returns in Ice Dance and Pairs
American ice dance duo Madison Chock and Evan Bates will not be participating in the Grand Prix series this season, as they have announced a break from competition. Conversely, Olympic gold medalists Laurence Fournier Beaudry and Guillaume Cizeron will begin their season at their home event, the Grand Prix de France. In pairs skating, German world champions Minerva Hase and Nikita Volodin will kick off their Grand Prix campaign at Skate America, following the retirement of Japanese Olympic pairs champions Riku Miura and Ryuichi Kihara in April.
