A New Era Under Center: Daniels Leads the Seminoles
Florida State's Strategic Quarterback Selection
Florida State University has formally declared former Auburn standout, Ashton Daniels, as the team's primary signal-caller for the 2026 athletic season. This announcement solidifies the leadership role for the much-anticipated season.
Daniels' Collegiate Journey and Experience
Daniels, who is nearing his 22nd birthday, brings a wealth of collegiate experience to the Seminoles. Over the past four seasons, he has competed in 37 games, having played for both Stanford (from 2022 to 2024) and Auburn (in 2025), accumulating significant playing time.
The Competition for the Starting Role
The decision to name Daniels as the starter came after a rigorous competition. He successfully surpassed redshirt freshman Kevin Sperry for the position. Head coach Mike Norvell confirmed the selection on Tuesday, following earlier remarks last week indicating he was still evaluating his options at the conclusion of spring practice.
Performance Highlights from Auburn
Towards the end of his tenure at Auburn last season, Daniels assumed the starting quarterback duties. In four games, he showcased his capabilities by completing 57.1% of his passes for 797 yards, throwing three touchdowns against two interceptions. Additionally, he contributed significantly on the ground with 280 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns.
Statistical Overview of Daniels' Career
Daniels' most impactful season occurred in 2023 while at Stanford, where he amassed 2,247 passing yards, tossed 11 touchdowns, and recorded eight interceptions. Throughout his four-year collegiate career, he has accumulated a total of 4,783 passing yards, 24 touchdowns, and 22 interceptions, complemented by an impressive 1,401 rushing yards and 11 scores on the ground.
Seminoles' Recent Quarterback Transfer Trend
This upcoming season marks the third consecutive year that Florida State will commence with a transfer quarterback leading the offense. However, this strategy has yielded mixed results in the recent past, with previous transfer starters D.J. Uiagalelei (2024) and Thomas Castellanos (2025) presiding over a combined record of 7-17 over the last two seasons, indicating a challenging period for the team.
