Hughes' inclusion on the watchlist is a testament to his consistent excellence. In 2025, he was a semifinalist for the same award while playing for the New Mexico Lobos. During his tenure there, he executed 41 punts, accumulating a total of 1,863 yards with an impressive average of 45.4 yards per punt. His precision was evident with 13 punts landing inside the 20-yard line, and his power was showcased by 13 punts traveling 50 yards or more. These achievements earned him an honorable mention in the All-Mountain West conference.

Hughes' athletic career began uniquely in Australian Rules Football, where he played for the Northern Bullants.
