Former Cyclones Step Onto the UFL Stage
The commencement of the 2026 United Football League season witnessed the participation of several athletes who previously represented the cardinal and gold colors of Iowa State. Their appearances marked a significant moment for these players as they embarked on a new chapter in their professional football careers.
Battlehawks Secure Victory, Dekkers Debuts for Gamblers
Hakeem Butler, a member of the St. Louis Battlehawks, was sidelined for their inaugural match, which saw his team clinch a 16-10 triumph against the reigning champions, the DC Defenders. Meanwhile, the Houston Gamblers introduced former Iowa State quarterback Hunter Dekkers to the field. Despite his efforts, Houston unfortunately suffered a 36-17 defeat at the hands of the Dallas Renegades.
Dekkers' Impressive Performance Despite Loss
Hunter Dekkers, who played 19 games for the Cyclones between 2020 and 2022, was subbed in as quarterback for the Gamblers during the fourth drive. The athlete from Hawarden completed 19 of 29 passes, accumulating 229 yards, and also contributed 28 rushing yards on three carries, scoring a touchdown. Following the game, Dekkers expressed confidence in his team's receiving corps, stating, "To be honest, this receiver room is one of the better ones in the league in my opinion. In my opinion, it’s the best one. But obviously we couldn’t we didn’t show that showcase that today. But it’s just building chemistry day by day. I mean, everyone just met each other four weeks ago. Building chemistry with receivers takes a lot of time."
Miller's Defensive Contribution for Columbus Aviators
In another UFL matchup, the Columbus Aviators faced a 23-16 loss on the road against the Orlando Storm. D.J. Miller, who previously played 27 games for the Cyclones from 2019 to 2021 before transferring to Kent State, made a notable impact on defense. He recorded three tackles, including one for a loss, during Sunday night's game, demonstrating his continued prowess on the field.
