Jayhawks in the Pros: Making Their Mark in the NFL Preseason
The Start of a New NFL Journey for Former Jayhawks
With the NFL preseason now underway, a cohort of athletes who once graced the fields for the Kansas football program are diligently working to solidify their positions. These players are engaged in intense training camp battles, each aiming to earn a more prominent role or secure a coveted spot on an NFL roster for the 2026 season.
A Fresh Era of Kansas Talent in the NFL
The current group of former Jayhawks in the professional ranks largely consists of those who developed under Coach Lance Leipold's leadership. While the veteran offensive lineman Hakeem Adeniji has retired after a brief stint with the Baltimore Ravens, defensive end Dorance Armstrong, currently recovering from an injury, stands as the last remaining player from the pre-Leipold era still active in the NFL. This shift signifies a new chapter for Kansas football's representation in the league.
Kansas Presence Strong in Seattle and San Francisco
The Seattle Seahawks lead with the largest contingent of former Kansas players, featuring three ex-Jayhawks on their roster. Offensive linemen Logan Brown and Bryce Cabeldue return as Super Bowl champions, eager to continue their success. They are joined by rookie wide receiver Emmanuel Henderson Jr., a sixth-round pick, who is looking to leverage his speed and special teams expertise to earn a role. Meanwhile, the San Francisco 49ers also boast two former Kansas linemen: Dominick Puni, a consistent starter in his first two seasons, and rookie Enrique Cruz Jr., who begins his professional journey after being drafted in 2026.
Building on Rookie Success and New Beginnings
Several second-year Jayhawks are focused on expanding upon their encouraging rookie performances. Running back Devin Neal joins the New Orleans Saints' training camp after a productive end to last season, while cornerback Cobee Bryant is back with the Atlanta Falcons, having seen action in seven games as an undrafted rookie. Wide receiver Luke Grimm also returns to the Los Angeles Chargers, aiming to solidify his place after spending time on both the active roster and practice squad. Additionally, Quentin Skinner embarks on his first season with the Buffalo Bills, and a host of rookies including Tommy Dunn Jr., D.J. Withers, Levi Wentz, Laith Marjan, Jalon Daniels, and Bangally Kamara are all vying for roster spots before the final cuts are made later this month.
