German law enforcement agencies have initiated a widespread inquiry into potential malfeasance connected to the UEFA European Championship held two years ago. This extensive probe involves allegations of improper benefits, such as unauthorized access to match tickets, travel arrangements, and lodging, reportedly received by city officials in host locations.
According to reports from Deutsche Welle, police forces executed coordinated raids across the nation as part of this corruption investigation. The operations targeted key sites, including the central office of the German Football Association (DFB) situated in Frankfurt. Additionally, municipal administrations in various cities that hosted the prestigious tournament were also subjected to searches.
More than 150 criminal police officers participated in these simultaneous actions. Their primary focus was to ascertain if local government officials in the German host cities had accepted thousands of tickets without proper authorization, alongside complimentary travel and accommodation services. Interior Minister Herbert Reul emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating that 'football tickets are not part of a salary' and warning that 'anyone in public service who takes advantage can expect a visit from us.'
The cities involved in these raids were Gelsenkirchen, Dortmund, Düsseldorf, Cologne, Hamburg, Berlin, Frankfurt, Stuttgart, and Munich, indicating the broad scope of the investigation. The authorities are committed to uncovering any misuse of public office for personal gain tied to the significant international sporting event.
