Professional golfer Trey Mullinax has been suspended for a period of six months by the PGA Tour. The disciplinary action follows a positive test for a prohibited substance, as classified by the World Anti-Doping Agency. This ruling means Mullinax, at 34 years old, will be ineligible to participate in tour events until January 16, 2027.
Mullinax publicly addressed the situation, taking full responsibility for the violation. He explained that the positive test resulted from medication he was taking for a medical condition first identified during his collegiate years. Both Mullinax and the PGA Tour have refrained from disclosing the specific substance involved or the exact date of the positive test that led to the breach of the performance-enhancing substances policy. He emphasized that his lack of awareness regarding the rules was not an excuse, asserting that he never intentionally used any substance to gain an unfair competitive advantage, and deeply respects the integrity of the sport.
This suspension comes after a challenging period for Mullinax, who has contended with hip injuries for the past three seasons, leading to the expiration of his major medical extension last year. His sole PGA Tour victory was at the Barbasol Championship in July 2022. Despite participating in two tournaments this year, he missed the cut in both. Mullinax, currently ranked 150th in the FedExCup Fall standings and 544th in the Official World Golf Ranking, expressed gratitude for the support he has received and looks forward to his return to competitive golf in 2027.
