Alex McMillin of West Allis Hale’s golf team was named the top high school athlete, breaking a long-standing record by winning an individual invitational. From May 4th to May 9th, the sports community voted to recognize Alex McMillin as the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel’s High School Athlete of the Week. McMillin, a golfer representing West Allis Hale, delivered a historic performance at the Kaz Invite held at New Berlin Hills on May 9th. His impressive score of 72 earned him medalist honors, making him the first Hale golfer in a quarter-century to win an individual title at such an event. This victory is a significant milestone for McMillin, who is committed to Millikin College (IL), and also contributed to Hale's 13th-place finish overall in the competition. The recognition reflects the overwhelming support he received, garnering 11,897 out of 18,584 total votes cast in the poll.
Following closely in the weekly poll, Laela Presendofer from Mukwonago High School was celebrated as the runner-up for her exceptional efforts in girls’ track and field. Presendofer’s dominant display at the Myrhum Invitational on May 9th was pivotal in leading Mukwonago to a second-place team finish. Her individual achievements included three distinct titles: she clinched the 100-meter top heat with a remarkable time of 11.95 seconds, setting a new statewide best for the outdoor season. Additionally, she secured victory in the 200-meter dash, finishing with a time of 24.17 seconds. Her athletic prowess was further highlighted as she ran the critical anchor leg for Mukwonago’s 4x200 relay team, which also took first place with a time of 1:38.98. Her outstanding multi-event performance showcases her as a formidable force in high school track.
Other commendable athletes who received nominations for the prestigious weekly honor included Donavin Bond from Nicolet boys’ track and field, Max Zastrow from Lake Country Lutheran boys’ golf, and Lucy Rate from Slinger girls’ track and field. These nominations acknowledge their significant contributions and strong performances across various events during the same competitive period, illustrating the depth of talent among high school athletes.
