The elite wheelchair category will kick off the competition, followed swiftly by the elite women at 10:25 AM. The course itself is a journey through the heart of the North East, starting in Newcastle on the A167 near Claremont Road. Runners will traverse the majestic River Tyne into Gateshead, then proceed eastward, culminating their effort with a scenic, mile-long stretch along the seafront in South Shields. Notoriously undulating, the route presents its most significant challenge between miles 8 and 12, characterized by a predominantly uphill climb that tests the endurance of even the most seasoned runners.

The elite fields are packed with talent. In the men's category, Kenyan defending champion Alex Mutiso is a strong contender to retain his title. He faces fierce competition from a diverse international roster, including American talents Casey Clinger, Zouhair Talbi, Clayton Young, Jared Ward, and Woody Kincaid, alongside Dutch runner Abdi Nageeye, Ethiopian Deresa Geleta, Italian Iliass Aouani, and a strong contingent from Japan, featuring Taiga Hirayama, Ayumu Kobayashi, and Yuki Takei. Great Britain & NI are well-represented with athletes like Ben Connor, Andy Butchart, and Alfie Manthorpe.

For the elite women, Kenyan powerhouse Sheila Chepkirui, also a defending champion, is expected to deliver a dominant performance. She will be challenged by fellow Kenyan Brigid Kosgei and Viola Lagat, as well as Ethiopian runners Tirunesh Dibaba and Melknat Wudu. Adding local excitement, Eilish McColgan from Great Britain & NI, returning from a foot injury that sidelined her from the Commonwealth Games, is eager to secure her maiden victory in this prestigious race. Japanese athletes Honami Maeda, Shiori Zama, and Rio Einaga also join the competitive field, alongside numerous talents from Great Britain & NI, including Amy-Eloise, Rebecca Weston, and Christa Cain, all vying for the top spot.

The Great North Run transcends a mere race; it is a vibrant celebration of human perseverance and community spirit. The sight of thousands of individuals, each with their own story and motivation, conquering this demanding course is truly inspiring. The meticulous planning, from the phased starts to the comprehensive broadcast coverage, ensures that both participants and viewers can fully immerse themselves in the event's unique atmosphere. It serves as a powerful reminder of the physical and mental strength required to push boundaries, and the collective joy found in achieving a shared goal, fostering a sense of unity and determination that resonates far beyond the finish line.
