Green Bay Packers Sign Veteran Quarterback Tyrod Taylor, Release Desmond Ridder

The Green Bay Packers have solidified their quarterback depth chart by bringing in seasoned veteran Tyrod Taylor to serve as the primary backup to Jordan Love. This strategic acquisition fills a void left by Malik Willis's earlier departure to the Miami Dolphins, signaling the team's commitment to experienced support behind their starting signal-caller. In a corresponding roster adjustment, the Packers released quarterback Desmond Ridder.

The agreement with Taylor, confirmed by the team, underscores the Packers' intention to bolster their reserves with a player who brings significant NFL experience. This marks Taylor's eighth team across a distinguished 16-season career since being drafted in 2011. His journey has seen him contribute to various franchises, accumulating a substantial body of work in the league.

Taylor's most recent stints included two seasons with the New York Jets. During the 2024 season, he appeared in a couple of games in relief of Aaron Rodgers, though a knee injury sustained prior to training camp in 2025 sidelined him. The subsequent year saw him step in for an injured Justin Fields and later replace an underperforming Fields, starting a total of three games before a groin injury in Week 14 interrupted his season, continuing a pattern of health challenges throughout his career.

While Taylor hasn't held a starting role for more than six games since his 2017 season with the Buffalo Bills, where he had his most extensive run as a starter, his overall record stands at 29-31-1 in 62 starts. Over the years, he has played for notable teams including the Baltimore Ravens, Cleveland Browns, Los Angeles Chargers, Houston Texans, and New York Giants. His career statistics reflect a completion percentage of 61.8%, amassing 13,033 passing yards, 73 touchdowns, and 34 interceptions.

Desmond Ridder, at 26 years old, had a brief tenure with the Packers, joining their practice squad in December and being promoted to the active roster a week later. However, he did not see any game action in 2025, having spent that season with the Minnesota Vikings. Prior to this, Ridder made 17 starts for the Atlanta Falcons between 2022 and 2023, and an additional start for the Las Vegas Raiders in 2024, accumulating 4,002 passing yards, 16 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions with a 63.6% completion rate across 25 career appearances.

This strategic personnel decision by the Packers to secure Tyrod Taylor demonstrates a clear focus on veteran leadership and stability within their quarterback unit, providing an experienced safety net for Jordan Love as they head into the upcoming season.
