From Montlake Legend to Professional Gridiron: Mickens' Enduring Legacy
Jaydon Mickens: A Return to His College Roots
A decade after dazzling fans as a star wide receiver for the Washington Huskies, Jaydon Mickens made a notable return to Montlake. During his tenure from 2012 to 2015, Mickens was a pivotal figure in the Huskies' offensive arsenal, known for his extraordinary speed and agility. He was a key member of the original 'Legion of Zoom,' alongside fellow speedsters John Ross and Marvin Hall, under the guidance of former coach Chris Petersen.
An Illustrious College Career: Records and Ranks
Throughout his four years at Montlake, Mickens amassed an impressive record of 203 receptions and 2,178 receiving yards. These statistics place him at No. 2 and No. 5, respectively, in the Huskies' school history. Only Rome Odunze, a 2024 first-round pick for the Chicago Bears, has since surpassed Mickens in career receptions. In terms of receiving yards, only Odunze and Dante Pettis, a former teammate, have exceeded Mickens' collegiate totals.
The Journey Beyond Montlake: NFL and UFL Ventures
Despite going undrafted in the 2016 NFL draft, Mickens carved out a successful professional career, playing five regular seasons in the NFL and two in the United Football League (UFL). His UFL career included a championship win with the DC Defenders in 2025, followed by a stint with the Birmingham Stallions. His journey showcases his resilience and determination to compete at the highest levels of professional football.
A Memorable Homecoming: The 2026 Non-Conference Matchup
Mickens' recent return to Husky Stadium was particularly poignant as it coincided with the Huskies' 2026 non-conference finale against Eastern Washington. This brought back memories of a thrilling 2014 game against the Eagles, where Mickens, then a true junior, played a crucial role. In that game, he contributed significantly with six receptions for 53 yards and 15 rushing yards, helping the then-Pac-12 program secure a 59-52 victory.
Second-Half Heroics: Earning Player of the Week Honors
Despite a slow start in the 2014 Eastern Washington game, where he had just four catches for -4 receiving yards by halftime, Mickens delivered an electrifying second-half performance. His efforts earned him Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week honors. He caught a 20-yard pass from quarterback Cyler Miles, followed by a 10-yard run, setting up a touchdown that gave the Huskies a 44-38 lead. He continued his stellar play with a trio of catches totaling 24 yards in the third quarter, culminating in another touchdown and a 52-45 lead. His final 13-yard reception led to Miles' third rushing touchdown, sealing the 59-52 victory against their FCS opponent.
