Harlem recently hosted its celebrated annual Percy Sutton Harlem 5K, attracting thousands of runners to its historic streets. This event, a collaborative effort between New York Road Runners, the Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce, and HARLEM WEEK, served as a dynamic kickoff to HARLEM WEEK, honoring the district's rich cultural tapestry and innovative spirit.
Over 5,000 individuals participated in the race, which commenced at Edgecombe Avenue and West 136th Street, concluding at St. Nicholas Avenue and West 138th Street. Among the notable participants was Eyewitness News sports anchor Sam Ryan, who ran alongside Keisha Sutton-James, former deputy Manhattan borough president, and high school students from NYRR's 'Run for the Future' initiative. This year's event also marked the 15th anniversary of the 'Run for the Future' program, celebrating the young women who successfully completed their inaugural 5K race. The gathering also saw the presence of NYRR CEO Rob Simmelkjaer and renowned hip-hop artist FERG, a proud Harlem native. Additionally, the race represented a significant accomplishment for members of the NYRR Open Run New Runner Clinic, as many completed their first 5K, marking a pivotal step in their running endeavors. The day's festivities extended to include the Rising New York Road Runners races for younger participants and the 1 Mile Hazel Dukes Memorial Family Health Walk.
This event vividly demonstrates the power of community engagement and the profound impact of initiatives that promote health and collective spirit. By fostering participation across all age groups and skill levels, the Percy Sutton Harlem 5K not only celebrates athleticism but also reinforces a sense of belonging and shared purpose. Such gatherings are vital in building stronger communities, inspiring personal achievements, and cultivating a positive, active lifestyle for everyone involved.
