The Harrison High School girls' golf team demonstrated exceptional form and preparedness for the upcoming sectional competition by clinching the City/County tournament held at Coyote Crossing. This event served as a crucial warm-up, allowing six local teams to fine-tune their strategies before the postseason officially commences. The participating teams included Central Catholic, Faith Christian, Harrison, Lafayette Jeff, McCutcheon, and West Lafayette, all vying for an early season advantage.
Individually, McCutcheon's Jaylee Gibb delivered a standout performance, leading all players with an impressive score of 39 (+3) over nine holes, highlighted by birdies on holes three and seven, and pars on holes five and eight. Close behind were Harrison's own Sydney Gehlsen and Nola Painter, each scoring 41, alongside West Lafayette's Emily Boaz with 42, and another Harrison player, Avery Wills, who finished with 43. With three of its players among the top five, Harrison's collective strength propelled them to a dominant team victory with a total score of 169. They were followed by McCutcheon (188), West Lafayette (199), Lafayette Jeff (227), Central Catholic (228), and Faith Christian (244). Despite their strong showing, both Gehlsen and Painter acknowledged areas for improvement, particularly in putting, as they look ahead to the demanding postseason.
Having secured back-to-back sectional titles in 2024 and 2025, Harrison is strongly positioned to pursue a third consecutive championship in 2026, largely due to a consistent roster of talented athletes. Their recent triumph at the City/County tournament further solidifies their belief in achieving this goal. The team's extensive knowledge of the Coyote Crossing course, which will also host the sectionals, provides a significant strategic advantage. As Painter noted, their familiarity with the course layout and conditions offers a psychological edge, akin to a practice run before the main event. Sectionals are set to begin at 9 a.m. on Monday, September 21st, where the initial six teams will be joined by Carroll (Flora), Clinton Central, Clinton Prairie, Delphi, Frontier, and Rossville. The top three teams, along with the top three individual players from non-advancing teams, will progress to the regional competition on Friday, September 25th, at Harrison Hills GC in Lafayette. Furthermore, this year's IHSAA state finals have been relocated to Battle Ground GC, scheduled for October 2nd-3rd. Harrison will aim to replicate their 2025 sectional success, where they triumphed with a score of 349, ahead of McCutcheon (377) and Central Catholic (397), and where Emily Boaz will defend her individual title against strong competitors like Gehlsen.
