The initial week of the high school football season presented a varied outcome for local teams, setting the stage for an intriguing second week. Four teams emerged victorious in their opening games, demonstrating strong performances. These teams, including Bloom-Carroll, Fisher Catholic, Berne Union, and Millersport, are now focused on maintaining their momentum. Conversely, teams that faced early setbacks are diligently working to refine their strategies and secure their first wins of the season. Coaches are emphasizing critical areas such as consistent offensive play and robust defensive stands, particularly as some teams embark on a series of demanding away games.
Local Football Teams Prepare for Intense Week 2 Clashes
The Lancaster Golden Gales, despite a challenging start to their season, displayed remarkable potential under the new leadership of Head Coach Jeremy McKinney. In their initial contest, the Gales held a promising 9-0 lead at halftime against Hilliard Darby. However, their inability to convert on critical third downs led to prolonged defensive plays, ultimately resulting in a 20-15 defeat after Hilliard Darby scored 20 unanswered points. Coach McKinney expressed confidence in his team's mental fortitude as they prepare for a series of three consecutive away games, beginning with a visit to Delaware Hayes this Friday. Their next home game at Fulton Field is scheduled for September 18 against Groveport.
Coach McKinney noted, "We executed many aspects well, but we need to improve our third-down conversions to sustain drives and get our defense off the field. We are making progress, and the team just needs to trust the process. On the defensive side, we had many players making tackles, and the issues we faced are fundamentally fixable." He also highlighted the team's resilience after falling behind 20-9, as they swiftly responded with a touchdown, narrowing the deficit to a single score. "Our players believe in our system and in us, and we reciprocate that belief," McKinney affirmed, underscoring the team's positive mindset heading into the upcoming game.
Meanwhile, the Berne Union Rockets delivered a dominant performance in their season opener, securing a convincing 40-6 victory over River Valley. This win marked the first of four consecutive road games for the Rockets, who will host their first home game on September 18 against Millersport. Junior quarterback Carson Kiger was a standout player, contributing to five touchdowns, with four passing and one rushing. In the second quarter alone, the Rockets exploded for 27 points, effectively putting the game out of reach.
The Fisher Catholic team also continued its strong run, extending their winning streak to nine out of the last twelve games after an impressive 8-3 record last year, which included a first-round playoff bye. Their recent victory came after a significant journey to Belpre. Senior Sam Tencza was instrumental in their success, excelling on both offense and defense, leading a formidable defense that restricted Belpre to a mere 50 rushing yards.
In other coaching news, Steve Daulton, formerly Lancaster's offensive coordinator, achieved his first head coaching triumph with Bloom-Carroll, leading his team to a significant road win against River Valley. After a 7-7 deadlock at halftime, the Bulldogs powered through the second half, accumulating a total of 427 yards, including an impressive 296 rushing yards.
Several players delivered exceptional performances during the opening week. Kyson Cline, a senior running back for Bloom-Carroll, amassed a career-high 237 rushing yards on 26 carries, scoring two touchdowns with runs of 67 and 71 yards. Berne Union's junior quarterback, Carson Kiger, threw for 262 yards and four touchdowns, completing 14 of 18 passes, in addition to a rushing touchdown. Lancaster's senior linebacker, Jackson Reynolds, led his team with 14 total tackles, including eight solo tackles. Fisher Catholic's Sam Tencza showcased his versatility with 127 rushing yards and a touchdown, a receiving touchdown, and ten tackles with two sacks on defense. Fairfield Union's senior quarterback, Dean Clark, completed 7 of 11 passes for 182 yards and two touchdowns. Other notable defensive efforts included Lancaster linebacker Geno Capretta with 12 tackles and Fairfield Union linebacker Keaton Webb with 11 tackles, including one for a loss.
