Despite these setbacks, they still managed to secure a playoff spot. This year, with a fully healthy roster, the Indians are poised to contend for the coveted NIC-10 championship.
Hononegah's Promising New Season
Head Coach Brian Zimmerman prefers to put the previous injury-riddled season behind them, expressing optimism for the current campaign: "We're moving past last season, and so far, things are looking very positive; we're in good health." A significant boost comes from the return of star running back and linebacker Brody Sendele, who missed last year due to a shoulder injury. Sendele, who went on to win a state wrestling championship in the off-season, is thrilled to be back on the gridiron. "I really missed football. I love playing with my teammates, unlike wrestling, which is more of an individual sport." Coach Zimmerman appreciates Sendele's competitive spirit, noting, "I always welcome wrestlers into our football program."
The team has also been strengthened by two key transfers from Boylan: formidable lineman Caleb Collins and promising quarterback Dominic Cacciatore. Zimmerman has observed Cacciatore's smooth integration into the team: "He has adapted exceptionally well to our offensive strategies and has quickly built a strong rapport with his teammates." Offensive lineman Richard Gambini praised Cacciatore's dedication, remarking, "His father, John, who coached at Boylan, had him thoroughly studying our plays with flashcards, so he knew them all even before training camp began. He looks fantastic."
Cacciatore will benefit from one of the NIC-10's most reliable receivers, 6-foot-4 Caleb Parker-Lones, who displayed flashes of brilliance last season. Zimmerman highlighted Parker-Lones's consistent ability to secure first downs. The team's receiving corps also includes Ryan Fritsch, a top conference sprinter, at slot receiver, and proven pass-catchers Giovanni Zepeda and tight end Logan Wilson. Sendele will share running back duties with Emerson Tuula. The offensive line boasts returning starters Tim Caver at center, Richard Gambini at right tackle, and Wyatt Kinney at right guard.
Defensively, the Indians feature strong players like Logan Wilson at defensive end, Tristen Ginn at tackle, and Chase Timmerman also at defensive end. Sendele and Tuula will anchor the linebacker positions, while Fritsch and Jacob Duval will patrol the defensive secondary. Sendele confidently stated, "I believe our defense is quite robust based on what I've seen in practice. I anticipate us having a very strong defensive unit."
