Hurricanes Secure Defenseman Juuso Välimäki with New One-Year Deal

The Carolina Hurricanes confirmed Wednesday that defenseman Juuso Välimäki has extended his stay with the team, finalizing a new one-year agreement. This contract ensures Välimäki will earn $900,000 for the 2026-27 season, regardless of whether he plays in the National Hockey League or the American Hockey League. Given his history as a first-round draft selection by Calgary in 2017 and considerable NHL playing time, Välimäki is anticipated to contend for the seventh defensive position on Carolina's roster against players like Charles Alexis Legault and Joel Nystrom.

An official statement released by the team on June 24, 2026, elaborated on the details of the signing. Eric Tulsky, General Manager for the Carolina Hurricanes, highlighted Välimäki’s career achievements, noting his 72 points (11 goals, 61 assists) in 271 NHL games. Välimäki, acquired by the Hurricanes on January 5th in exchange for future considerations, demonstrated strong performance during the 2025-26 season. He split his time between Tucson and Chicago in the AHL, accumulating 23 points (7 goals, 16 assists) in 27 regular-season matches and an additional 14 points (5 goals, 9 assists) in 21 playoff games, contributing to the Chicago Wolves' run to the Calder Cup Final. Before turning professional, Välimäki played three seasons in the Western Hockey League (WHL) with Tri-City, amassing 138 points (40 goals, 98 assists) and 92 penalty minutes in 159 appearances, earning recognition on the WHL West Second All-Star Team in both 2017 and 2018.

This re-signing reflects the Hurricanes' strategic planning for their defensive lineup, securing a seasoned player who brings both NHL experience and a strong AHL track record. Välimäki's commitment underscores the organization's focus on building a robust and competitive team, providing him with a clear path to contribute to their future successes.
