The Illinois High School Track and Field State Finals recently concluded, highlighting extraordinary performances from student-athletes across various disciplines. This year's competition saw a Gillespie senior distance runner achieve a historic triple crown, while an Auburn relay team cemented its legacy with a repeat victory, demonstrating consistent excellence and remarkable athleticism.
Chaz Oberkfell, a senior from Gillespie High School, distinguished himself by claiming state titles in the one-mile, two-mile, and three-mile races within the Class 1A division. His victory in the 3,200-meter run, contested on Saturday at O'Brien Field, was particularly memorable. After winning his heat with an impressive time of 9 minutes, 8.17 seconds, Oberkfell faced an anxious wait of over an hour. The outcome hinged on the final heat, where Toulon Stark County sophomore Evan Knobloch's time of 9:32.06 ultimately secured Oberkfell the state championship, a moment he described as anticlimactic but deeply satisfying.
Oberkfell's dominance extended to the 1,600-meter event, where he narrowly defeated Sullivan's Johnathan Iacobazzi by a mere 0.07 seconds, finishing in 4:14.66. Reflecting on this intense race, he credited divine assistance for his burst of energy in the final lap. His remarkable season also included a second consecutive Class 1A boys cross country state title in November, where he outpaced Knobloch by a significant margin. Additionally, Oberkfell secured an eighth-place finish in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:56.66, underscoring his versatility and endurance.
The Auburn 4x400-meter relay team also made history by securing their second consecutive Class 1A state title. The team, anchored by Jacob Barth, set a new 1A record with a time of 3:17.79, finishing more than five seconds ahead of second-place Forreston. Barth expressed pride in proving their previous win was no accident, emphasizing their focus and dedication. The team's lineup saw Hunter Piper leading off, followed by James Baisden, and sophomore Sam Talavera replacing the graduated Carter Hunley. This new configuration maintained their winning momentum, leading nearly wire-to-wire.
Piper noted the team's increased confidence this year, especially after improved preliminary performances compared to the previous season. Baisden acknowledged that while the title wasn't "easier," their heightened level of competition and more intense training paid off. The team celebrated their victory with a planned steak and shrimp combo, marking the end of a successful season. Barth also achieved an individual second-place finish in the 400-meter dash, clocking in at 48.74 seconds.
Beyond these individual and team triumphs, several other local athletes brought home accolades. Chatham Glenwood's McKenzie Doe III and Larry Wills contributed to their team's third-place finish in the Class 2A high jump, with Doe securing second and Wills third. Their combined 15 points allowed Glenwood to surpass strong competitors. Pleasant Plains claimed second overall in 1A with 34 points, featuring Elijah Teefey's third-place finish in the 3,200 meters. Taylorville junior Liam Bettis earned second in the Class 2A 1,600-meter run and seventh in the 3,200, expressing mixed feelings about a near-miss for a state championship. Other notable performances included Southeast's Kamri Sales taking second in the 2A triple jump, Carlinville’s Austin Homer placing third in the 1A pole vault, Jacksonville’s Darren Henry finishing third in the 2A high jump, and Rushville-Industry's Ian Escapa securing third in the 1A triple jump.
