Reuben Lowery III's Unexpected Departure from Professional Football
On Tuesday, the Indianapolis Colts confirmed that safety Reuben Lowery III has decided to conclude his professional football career, placing him on the Reserve/Retired list. This marks an early end to his tenure with the Colts, having joined the team last year.
Lowery's Brief Stint with the Colts and Ravens
Lowery III was acquired by the Colts midway through last season after being claimed off waivers from the Baltimore Ravens. Despite joining the team, he did not see any game action for Indianapolis. Prior to his time with the Colts, Lowery, an undrafted rookie in 2025, played in three games for the Ravens, starting one, where he recorded five tackles before being waived.
Significant Roster Changes in the Safety Position
Lowery's retirement is the latest in a series of substantial changes within the Colts' safety unit. The team has experienced a considerable turnover, with several key players moving on. Notable departures include former starting safety Nick Cross, who signed with the Washington Commanders, and backup Rodney Thomas II, who joined the Seattle Seahawks. Veteran special teamer George Odum, who had a previous stint with Indianapolis, also remains unsigned.

To address these changes, the Colts have brought in new talent, including rookie third-round pick AJ Haulcy, along with veteran free agent signings Juanyeh Thomas and Jonathan Owens, who are expected to provide depth. The team's roster also includes undrafted rookie Austin Brown from Wisconsin and Ben Nikkel from Iowa State, who was part of the Colts' practice squad last year, indicating a blend of fresh faces and returning potential.
