Ismail Elfath to Officiate England vs. Argentina World Cup Semi-Final

Ismail Elfath has been selected to officiate the critical World Cup semi-final match between England and Argentina, set to take place in Atlanta. Elfath, originally from Morocco, relocated to the United States at the age of 18 through a diversity visa program and later earned a degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Texas in 2006.

His journey in football officiating began with his Major League Soccer debut in 2012, followed by his accreditation as a Fifa official in 2016. Elfath’s international experience includes officiating at the U20 World Cup in 2019 and making his senior tournament debut in Qatar, where he oversaw three matches, including a round of 16 encounter between Japan and Croatia. This upcoming semi-final will be his fourth match in the 2026 World Cup, highlighting his consistent presence at the sport's highest level. Notably, he issued a red card to Uruguay's Agustin Cannobio during a group stage match against Spain and also refereed Norway's victory over Brazil in the round of 16. The rivalry between England and Argentina is long-standing, with their last friendly match occurring in Geneva in 2005, and their most recent World Cup knockout stage meeting in 1998, which Argentina won via penalties in the round of 16.

The officiating team for the England vs. Argentina match will feature Ismail Elfath (USA) as the main referee, supported by assistant referees Corey Parker and Kyle Atkins (both from USA), and Maurizio Mariani (Italy) as the fourth official. This selection underscores the global nature of football and the diverse talents brought together to ensure fair play on the world stage. It reminds us that dedication and hard work can lead individuals to achieve their dreams and contribute significantly to global events, fostering a spirit of international cooperation and sportsmanship.
