Embrace the Challenge: Fearless Cricket on the Global Stage
Captain Iyer's Steadfast Support for Young Talent
India's captain, Shreyas Iyer, has publicly affirmed his belief in the emerging batting star, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, as the team gears up for the upcoming three-match T20 International series against Zimbabwe. Iyer conveyed his strong conviction that the young athlete has assimilated valuable lessons from his initial forays into international cricket, positioning him for a more significant contribution to the team's performance.
Overcoming Early Hurdles: Sooryavanshi's Learning Curve
Speaking just before the inaugural match in Harare, Iyer dismissed any concerns regarding Sooryavanshi's capacity to rebound, particularly after the 15-year-old encountered a demanding tour in England. Despite becoming India's youngest international cricketer during the England series, Sooryavanshi's initial performances were modest, leading to his exclusion from the fifth match in favor of Sanju Samson. Nevertheless, Iyer is convinced that the young player has utilized this period effectively for self-improvement, stating, "All the youngsters, I think, they have definitely practiced. There was a decent gap after the T20 series. So he (Sooryavanshi) must have rectified where he went wrong. So personally, I don't have to give much advice."
A Call for Uninhibited Play: Iyer's Vision for the Squad
The Indian squad approaches the Zimbabwe series with the aim of rebounding from a disappointing white-ball tour of Ireland and England, which occurred under Iyer's captaincy. The skipper has urged his youthful team to play with complete freedom, unburdened by the apprehension of criticism or the fear of failure. He articulated his philosophy: "I don't think they should fear failure because when you have such thoughts at the back of your mind, then you play to save yourself. When you don't have that fear, you can get the best out of yourself."
Adapting to Adversity: The Team's Resilience
Acknowledging the demanding schedule, which saw India traveling directly from England with only a single practice session before their opening fixture, Iyer expressed confidence in his team's ability to adapt swiftly. He also reflected on his personal journey of recovery from injury, sharing that overcoming such obstacles had significantly fortified his mental resolve. "It has made me more confident as an individual. When you overcome the injury phase, mentally it makes you very positive. Whatever challenges you face on the field, you know how quickly you can overcome them," he remarked.
Sooryavanshi's Renewed Focus and Confidence
Meanwhile, Sooryavanshi has openly shared that the past four months have been a period of intense emotional fluctuations, yet he stressed that his self-assurance remains unshaken. "Yes, there have been several ups and down in the last four months; it's part of cricket it will keep happening but I have to follow the process and give my 100 per cent for the team," the youngster conveyed to bcci.tv. His temporary exclusion from the final T20I against England had drawn criticism from some quarters, questioning the decision to bench the teenager after only three innings. However, Sooryavanshi credits the unwavering support from the coaching staff for helping him regain his concentration, stating, "It's an obvious thing that whatever I want (guidance etc), the coaches are making it available and whatever practice I require I am getting that. Feeling very good, there is confidence also."
A Return to Familiar Triumphs: Harare's Special Significance
The Zimbabwe tour holds a particularly sentimental value for Sooryavanshi, as it marks a return to the very ground in Harare where he famously led India to victory in the Under-19 World Cup earlier this year. His spectacular performance, including a breathtaking 175 runs off just 80 balls against England in the final, remains a cherished memory. "It's a very memorable ground for me. Just four months back, we had played the U-19 World Cup Final and won, so a very special ground," he reminisced. Buoyed by the insights gained from that successful tournament, Sooryavanshi expressed his eagerness to capitalize on his familiarity with the local conditions should he be selected for the opening T20I, affirming, "I will back my practice which I have done so far and try to back my game... whatever contribution I can make for the team I will try to give that."
