A Historic Tenure Concludes
After four impactful years, Jessica Campbell's journey as an assistant coach with the Seattle Kraken is drawing to a close. The team formally announced her decision not to renew her contract, signifying the end of a groundbreaking chapter for both Campbell and the NHL franchise.
Breaking Barriers on the Bench
At 33 years old, Campbell etched her name into hockey history in 2024, becoming the inaugural woman to secure a full-time coaching position on an NHL bench with the Seattle Kraken. This appointment was a testament to her expertise and dedication, paving the way for greater diversity in professional sports coaching.
Kraken's Endorsement of Her Next Steps
Jason Botterill, the Kraken's executive vice president and general manager, issued a statement acknowledging Campbell's desire to seek out alternative coaching roles across the league. He expressed the organization's full support for her ambitions, recognizing her invaluable contributions over the past four seasons. Botterill praised her profound understanding of the game and her unique ability to mentor and develop players, affirming the team's strong belief in her coaching prowess for the future.
Previous Successes with the Firebirds
Prior to her time with the Kraken, Campbell served as an assistant coach for the Coachella Valley Firebirds, Seattle's AHL affiliate, from 2022 to 2024. During her tenure, the Firebirds twice advanced to the Calder Cup Final, though they ultimately fell to the Hershey Bears in hard-fought series in both 2023 (seven games) and 2024 (six games).
International and European Coaching Experience
Campbell's pioneering spirit extended to the international stage in 2022, when she became the first woman to join a coaching staff at the IIHF Men's World Championship as an assistant for Germany. Before that, she gained valuable experience as an assistant coach with Nurnberg in Germany during the 2021-22 season, further solidifying her diverse coaching background.
A Distinguished Playing Career
Hailing from Saskatchewan, Campbell's impressive hockey career began with collegiate play at Cornell. She also celebrated significant international success, winning gold medals with Canada at the World U18 Championship in 2010 and the 4 Nations Cup in 2014. Her professional playing career included a stint in the Canadian Women's Hockey League with the Calgary Inferno before she transitioned into coaching in 2017.
