Jonesville Secures Thrilling Extra-Innings Victory in Regional Baseball Semifinal

In a thrilling Division 3, Region 44 semifinal, the Jonesville High School baseball team emerged victorious over Centreville with a 9-8 extra-innings win. What initially appeared to be a dominant performance by Jonesville, who had established a 7-2 lead, turned into a nail-biting comeback by Centreville in the seventh inning. Despite the challenge, the Comets displayed remarkable resilience, forcing extra innings and ultimately sealing their victory with a dramatic walk-off hit, securing their place in the regional championship game.

The game, held on Wednesday, June 3, at Centreville High School, saw senior Marshall Baker setting a strong precedent for Jonesville from the pitcher's mound. Baker delivered four solid innings, allowing only three hits and two runs (one earned) while striking out three and issuing one walk. His leadership was palpable, guiding the team through crucial moments.

Jonesville's offense found its rhythm early, with senior Ian Doyle singling home the tying run in the second inning. The Comets then took the lead in the third on Talon Titus' sacrifice fly. The turning point appeared to be the fourth inning, where a five-run surge, highlighted by Carson Young's two-run single, extended Jonesville's lead to a seemingly secure 7-2. Baker contributed significantly at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two doubles, two stolen bases, two RBIs, three runs scored, and a walk. Young also had an impressive day with two hits and a team-best three RBIs, while Titus added two RBIs. The team's collective effort resulted in eight hits and eight walks, showcasing a well-rounded offensive attack.

However, Centreville mounted an unexpected comeback in the seventh inning against Jonesville's relief pitcher, Carson Young. The Bulldogs exploded for six runs, overturning the deficit and taking an 8-7 lead. With their season on the line, Jonesville demonstrated incredible fortitude. In the bottom of the seventh, freshman Aiden Bolze-Sweebe reached base with two outs, sparking a rally. The bases were loaded, and Marshall Baker drew a crucial walk, forcing home the tying run and pushing the game into extra innings, a testament to the team's never-say-die attitude.

Coach Brian Stroble commended his team's collective effort, particularly highlighting the contributions from both seasoned players and promising newcomers. The integration of several freshmen from a successful junior varsity team proved instrumental. The team's bench players also rose to the occasion when called upon, demonstrating their commitment and readiness. This blend of experience and fresh talent created a vibrant atmosphere in the dugout, fostering a competitive spirit that Baker noted had been a defining characteristic of their journey.

The extra innings brought further tension and showcased another young talent. Freshman pitcher Connor Chenevare entered the game during Centreville's rally and fearlessly navigated the high-pressure situation, pitching the seventh, eighth, and ninth innings. Despite allowing four runs (only one earned), Chenevare held strong, supported by exceptional fielding from his teammates, as Jonesville fended off multiple threats. After loading the bases in the eighth but failing to score, the stage was set for a dramatic ninth inning.

In the bottom of the ninth, Marshall Baker once again found himself in a pivotal position. He reached base, stole second, and then advanced to third, putting the winning run just 90 feet away. This brought Carson Young back to the plate, who delivered a decisive line drive single to center field. Baker crossed home plate, igniting a jubilant celebration from the Jonesville dugout. This victory marks Jonesville's second consecutive postseason championship opportunity, the first time they have reached a regional title game since 2024. Baker emphasized the team's ongoing commitment to improvement, stating, "There's always stuff to work on, whether you're hitting or playing the field."
