PWHL Detroit has officially announced Michigan native Josh Sciba as the team's inaugural head coach, marking a significant step for the expansion franchise. The 41-year-old's appointment was confirmed on Thursday, bringing a wealth of experience to the burgeoning professional women's hockey league.
Sciba's professional background includes two seasons as an assistant coach for the PWHL's New York Sirens, where he contributed to the team's development. Furthermore, he served as an assistant coach for the victorious 2026 U.S. women's Olympic hockey team, which clinched a gold medal. Detroit's General Manager, Manon Rheaume, expressed confidence in Sciba, praising his deep understanding of the game, extensive experience across all levels of women's hockey, and his innate ability to lead and mentor. She particularly noted his strong ties to the 'Hockeytown' ethos and his eagerness to contribute to the city's rich sporting legacy.
Before his recent roles, Sciba led the women's hockey program at Union College as head coach from 2016 to 2024, following a four-year tenure as an assistant coach at Colgate from 2012 to 2016. He conveyed immense honor and enthusiasm for the new position, emphasizing the personal significance of coaching in his home state, especially given Detroit's profound hockey history. Sciba also highlighted his excitement to collaborate with Manon Rheaume, whose vision and passion are expected to elevate Detroit as a prime destination for talented players. The upcoming 2026-27 season will see Detroit as one of four new expansion teams, alongside Las Vegas, San Jose, and Hamilton, Ontario, effectively doubling the league's size from its original six teams established in 2023.
This new chapter for PWHL Detroit, guided by Sciba's leadership, represents not only a strategic expansion of the league but also a powerful affirmation of the growing opportunities within women's professional sports. It underscores a collective commitment to fostering athletic excellence and expanding the global footprint of women's hockey, inspiring future generations of athletes and fans alike.
