Lakers G League Team Relocates to Coachella Valley

The Los Angeles Lakers organization has officially unveiled plans for a significant transformation of its NBA G League franchise, involving both a geographic shift and a new identity. This strategic move aims to broaden the team's reach and enhance its operational infrastructure, securing a cutting-edge venue and establishing a stronger connection with a key regional demographic, building upon the Lakers' historical ties to the area.

Beginning with the 2026-27 season, the team, formerly known as the South Bay Lakers, will embark on a new chapter as the Coachella Valley Lakers. This rebranding coincides with their relocation to California's scenic Greater Palm Springs region, where they will establish their new home base. The decision underscores a commitment to fostering a vibrant athletic and entertainment hub within the valley.

The centerpiece of this transition is the Acrisure Arena, a state-of-the-art facility boasting an 11,000-seat capacity. This modern venue, which also serves as the home ice for the Coachella Valley Firebirds, an AHL affiliate of the NHL's Seattle Kraken, will provide a premier setting for the G League team's home games. The arena's advanced amenities promise an exceptional experience for both fans and athletes.

Lon Rosen, the President of Business Operations for the Lakers, articulated the immense potential of this relocation. He highlighted the deep-rooted presence the Lakers have maintained in the Coachella Valley for many decades, recalling the Showtime Lakers' training camps in the 1980s and more recent preseason engagements. This history, he noted, provides a strong foundation for the new team's integration into the community.

The organization anticipates that the Coachella Valley Lakers will become a fundamental element of the region's sports and entertainment landscape. Rosen emphasized that Acrisure Arena is ideally suited to deliver a superior fan-first experience, while simultaneously ensuring that players have access to top-tier facilities and ample space necessary for optimal performance on game days.

The franchise's journey began in 2006 as the Los Angeles D-Fenders. In 2017, the team underwent its first rebranding, adopting the name South Bay Lakers and settling in El Segundo, California, a suburb of Los Angeles. This upcoming move marks another pivotal evolution in the team's history, signaling a renewed focus on regional engagement and strategic development within the Lakers' expansive ecosystem.

This relocation and rebranding signify a forward-looking strategy for the Lakers' G League program.
