Despite a 4-0 deficit in the third inning, Lancaster showcased incredible resilience, rallying to score five runs and take a 5-4 lead. However, Hilliard Bradley managed to tie the game and then secured the victory with a crucial two-run double in the seventh inning. This achievement marks a historic moment for Lancaster, reaching the state final four for the second consecutive year and finishing a season that saw them overcome an early slump to achieve significant success.
In a thrilling Division I state championship game held on Thursday, June 4, at Akron's Firestone Stadium, the Lancaster Lady Gales faced Hilliard Bradley. The game commenced with Hilliard Bradley taking an early lead, as Sophia Lopez hit a solo home run in the first inning, followed by three more runs in the third, putting Lancaster in a 4-0 hole. However, the Lady Gales, known for their unwavering determination throughout the season, mounted a spectacular comeback in the bottom of the third. Capitalizing on two errors, Lana Prince and Kendall Brown delivered RBI singles, and Kileigh Rohr hit a pivotal two-run double, tying the score. Hannah Smith then drove in another run, giving Lancaster a 5-4 advantage.
The momentum shifted back and forth, as Hilliard Bradley managed to tie the game at 5-5 in the fourth inning. Lancaster had a golden opportunity to reclaim the lead in the bottom of the sixth with runners in scoring position but was unable to convert. The decisive moment arrived in the top of the seventh. After a leadoff hit-by-pitch and an error, Sophia Lopez once again proved to be the hero for Hilliard Bradley, smashing a two-run double that ultimately secured their 7-5 victory. Kileigh Rohr started on the mound for Lancaster, pitching two innings, while Mackenzie Hedrick provided relief. Hailey Rings and Hannah Smith were offensive standouts, each contributing two hits to Lancaster's seven-hit performance.
Although the championship title eluded them, Head Coach Allie Kinniard expressed immense pride in her team, particularly the six seniors: Kendall Brown, Hailey Rings, Kileigh Rohr, Mia Griggs, Hannah Smith, and Lana Prince. This senior class leaves behind an impressive legacy, having accumulated 102 career wins, two Ohio Capital Conference-Buckeye Division titles, and three district championships. Their journey included reaching the state tournament for the first time in school history in 2025 and upsetting the No. 1 ranked team, Austintown-Fitch, in the state semifinal this year. Coach Kinniard emphasized the profound impact these seniors have had on the program, inspiring younger players and setting a strong foundation for the future of Lancaster softball.
