A quarter-century after their triumphant Division 1 state championship victory, the legendary 1996 Leominster High baseball team reconvened for a heartfelt ceremony at Polar Park. The event saw Tino Proietti, the standout pitcher from that championship season, deliver the ceremonial first pitch to his former teammate, Rich Barnaby, now the current Leominster High baseball coach. Proietti, reflecting on the moment, humorously noted the passage of time on his pitching arm, yet the essence of their past glory remained palpable.
The 1996 squad boasted an impressive 23-2 record, culminating in a 5-4 state final win against Peabody. Proietti's impeccable senior season record of 10-0 with a 1.01 ERA was capped by a complete game performance in the championship match. This significant victory also marked a milestone for their esteemed coach, Emile Johnson, as it secured his 500th career win. Johnson, who eventually amassed 726 victories and three state titles, remains the most successful Division 1 baseball coach in state history.
For Coach Johnson, witnessing his former players, now accomplished men, reunite and reminisce about their shared journey was deeply gratifying. Players traveled from various states, including California, Florida, and Virginia, to be part of the festivities, highlighting the profound bond forged by their championship experience. Barnaby expressed immense gratitude for the opportunity to honor Coach Johnson, emphasizing the enduring influence their mentor had on their lives, shaping them into the individuals they are today, both on and off the field.
This reunion at Polar Park served as a powerful reminder of teamwork, perseverance, and the lasting impact of mentorship. It underscored how athletic achievements can transcend mere competition, fostering lifelong connections and shaping character. The celebration not only honored a remarkable past but also inspired a sense of continued camaraderie and the pursuit of excellence in all endeavors.
