The professional golf organization, LIV Golf, has officially concluded a legal dispute with Stinger Golf, a company specializing in golf tee production. The resolution involves LIV Golf remitting a sum of $1 million to the Ohio-based manufacturer, bringing to a close a lawsuit alleging trademark infringement. This legal action stemmed from LIV Golf's use of the 'Stinger Golf Club' moniker for one of its inaugural four-man teams, which made its debut in 2022.
Team Rebranding Amidst Legal Pressures
Prior to the formal settlement, the LIV Golf team originally known as 'Stinger Golf Club' underwent a significant transformation. In January, ahead of the 2026 LIV golf season, the team was rebranded as Southern Guards GC. This name change occurred independently of, but was undoubtedly influenced by, the impending legal challenge initiated by Stinger Golf, which had filed a lawsuit seeking $100 million in damages in June 2025.
The Million-Dollar Compromise
Ultimately, Stinger Golf opted to accept a $1 million payment from LIV Golf, as detailed in a court filing dated July 6 in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida. This figure, though considerably less than the initial demand, represents a negotiated compromise. Brian Barakat, a partner at Barakat + Bossa, the legal firm representing Stinger Golf, acknowledged that while the sum did not cover all damages incurred by his client, it was a pragmatic business decision.
A Deliberate Infringement and Strategic Concession
Barakat further elaborated on the perceived nature of the infringement, stating that LIV Golf was reportedly aware of Stinger Golf's trademark well before establishing their team, yet proceeded regardless. He characterized LIV's actions as a blatant disregard for intellectual property rights. The decision to settle, from Stinger Golf's perspective, was not born out of a lack of confidence in their case, but rather a strategic response to the precarious financial state of LIV Golf and the looming possibility of bankruptcy proceedings.
The Southern Guards GC Roster and Settlement Details
The newly christened Southern Guards GC team is comprised of South African golfers Louis Oosthuizen, Charl Schwartzel, Branden Grace, and Dean Burmeister. The legal settlement named LIV Golf, World Wide Golf Brands (a former apparel partner), and the Stinger GC golf team as defendants. However, only LIV Golf will be responsible for making payments to Stinger Golf, confirming its central role in the resolution of this trademark dispute.
