Two talented tennis players hailing from Cincinnati's high school circuit have earned coveted wild card entries into the qualifying rounds of the Cincinnati Open.
The tournament organizers announced on Friday, July 31st, that JJ Wolf, a product of Cincinnati Country Day, and Vignesh Gogineni, an alumnus of Mason High School, will compete for a spot in the main draw. Both athletes have distinguished themselves in the sport, with Wolf having achieved a career-high ranking of 39 in 2023. His recent appearances in ATP Challenger events in Bloomfield Hills, Lincoln, and Cary signal his return to competitive play following a year-long hiatus due to shoulder injuries. Wolf is still seeking his inaugural main draw win at his hometown tournament, having previously been eliminated in the Round of 64 on three occasions and in the opening qualifying round in his last attempt. Meanwhile, Gogineni boasts an impressive high school career, including three All-Ohio selections, an All-American honor, and a state singles title in 2022. He further contributed to Mason's team state championship victory in 2019 before continuing his tennis journey at Yale University, where he earned first-team All-Ivy accolades and participated in the NCAA Individual Championships. Gogineni has already competed in five ITF events this year, reaching the quarterfinals twice in California during June.
The Cincinnati Open's qualifying matches are scheduled to begin on Tuesday, August 11th. In addition to the local talents, the main draw wild cards were extended to former Cincinnati Open victor Grigor Dimitrov, three-time Major champion Stan Wawrinka, Jack Draper, and Gael Monfils, setting the stage for an exciting tournament showcasing both established stars and emerging local heroes.
