The Texas Longhorns baseball squad, ranked second nationally, recently clinched a 10-8 win against the Texas State Bobcats at UFCU Disch-Falk Field, breaking a four-game losing streak at home against them. This triumph was largely thanks to a powerful six-run rally in the sixth inning, which ultimately secured their first Tuesday victory in three weeks.
Ethan Mendoza, a junior infielder, was a standout player, contributing an extra run with a solo home run in the eighth inning. His impressive performance included going 3-for-4 at the plate with a walk, driving in three runs, and scoring three times, featuring two doubles and his sixth home run of the season. On the pitching side, senior right-hander Max Grubbs, making his first start since 2024, faced early challenges, conceding three runs on five hits in the first inning. However, a series of five relief pitchers, including junior left-hander Kade Bing, who provided three innings of solid performance, managed to stabilize the game.
Trailing 5-3 in the bottom of the sixth, the Longhorns turned the tide with a massive inning. Junior Casey Borba ignited the offense with a 443-foot solo home run, his tenth of the season. Following two walks, Mendoza capitalized on a two-out rally with a crucial two-run double, followed by a single from junior catcher Carson Tinney and another two-run single from freshman outfielder Anthony Pack Jr., aided by a Texas State error. Despite a late surge from the Bobcats in the seventh, the Longhorns' bullpen, led by freshman right-hander Brett Crossland and culminating in a perfect ninth inning from freshman right-hander Sam Cozart, managed to close out the game. Earlier in the match, junior center fielder Aiden Robbins also contributed with a two-run homer, and Mendoza showcased his speed and strategy by doubling, stealing third, and scoring on a wild pitch.
This victory underscores the team's resilience and offensive power, demonstrating their capacity to overcome early setbacks and secure crucial wins. Such performances not only boost team morale but also showcase the dynamic talent within their roster, promising an exciting season ahead for the Longhorns.
