Louisiana Tech Bulldogs Join Sun Belt Conference for 2026-27 Season

A recent agreement has brought an end to the conference affiliation dispute involving the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs. The institution will officially transition to the Sun Belt Conference for the 2026-27 academic year, effective July. This significant development follows a period of uncertainty, as both Conference USA (CUSA) and the Sun Belt had initially included Louisiana Tech in their respective 2026 football schedules.

Louisiana Tech Joins Sun Belt, CUSA Revises Plans

On Monday, April 27, 2026, Conference USA announced a resolution with Louisiana Tech, confirming the Bulldogs' departure for the Sun Belt. This move will restore the Sun Belt to a 14-member league, filling the void left by the earlier departure of Texas State. Conversely, Conference USA will proceed with 10 member institutions for the 2026 season, having also seen UTEP move to the Mountain West. The need for CUSA to revise its 2026 football schedule mirrors a similar situation in 2022 when Marshall, Old Dominion, and Southern Miss transitioned to the Sun Belt.

The newly confirmed 2026 football schedule for Louisiana Tech, featuring eight Sun Belt conference matchups, is as follows:

This outcome highlights the dynamic and often complex nature of collegiate athletic conference alignments. For Louisiana Tech, the move to the Sun Belt offers new competitive opportunities and geographic rivalries. For Conference USA, it necessitates strategic realignment and schedule adjustments, underscoring the ongoing evolution within college sports. This shift also reflects the growing influence and attractiveness of the Sun Belt Conference in the collegiate athletic landscape.
