A major development in the MotoGP world sees Luca Marini, Valentino Rossi's half-brother, making a significant career move. He is confirmed to depart from Honda and will be joining the Tech3 KTM squad for the 2027 and 2028 MotoGP championships. This transition is particularly noteworthy as Tech3, now operating under a revised ownership structure helmed by Guenther Steiner, will independently manage rider negotiations and contracts starting in 2027, albeit still requiring final approval from KTM, their technical and bike supplier.
Marini's path to Tech3 was unexpected; initially, he wasn't on their list of potential recruits. However, a proactive approach by his agent at the Italian Grand Prix initiated discussions with Steiner. This was followed by a subsequent meeting with KTM motorsport director Pit Beirer in June, where Marini successfully impressed the management teams of both KTM and Tech3, leading to the public announcement of his two-year agreement. Marini's racing career began in 2016 in the Moto2 class, where he achieved six victories and 15 podium finishes over five seasons, including a runner-up spot in his final year. He then moved to the premier class in 2021 with Ducati's satellite team VR46, securing two podiums in his third season: a second-place finish in Austin and a third-place finish in Qatar. In 2024, he joined the official Honda team, taking over from Marc Marquez, and recorded his best results with fifth-place finishes at the Hungarian rounds in 2025 and 2026, as well as the Indonesian GP in 2025.
While Marini's signing is now confirmed, Tech3 is still in the process of finalizing his teammate for the upcoming season. All indications suggest that Australian rider Senna Agius is the frontrunner for the spot. Agius, currently competing in Moto2, holds third place overall, trailing championship leader Manu Gonzalez by 61.5 points. Despite Gonzalez's strong performance, it appears he has been ruled out as an option for Tech3's second seat.
