The MAC asserts that established replay guidelines were disregarded, leading to an erroneous decision regarding game time and, consequently, the final score.
According to MAC Commissioner Jon Steinbrecher, a thorough review indicated that the Big Ten's replay officials failed to adhere to the standard protocol. Instead of relying on the game clock displayed on the broadcast feed, they reportedly used an internal clock within their replay system to determine if time remained. This deviation, Steinbrecher claims, led to an additional second being added to the clock, allowing Michigan to execute the game-winning play. Had the correct protocol been followed, he contends, Western Michigan would have secured a 12-7 win.
The MAC is now formally petitioning the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision Oversight Committee and the College Football Playoff to officially recognize Western Michigan as the victor for all ranking, evaluation, and selection considerations.
