Polish tennis star Maja Chwalinska, acclaimed for her remarkable performance as the runner-up at Roland Garros, has secured her first victory since her impressive May showing. She triumphed over Spain's Cristina Busca with a commanding 6-2, 6-2 score in the second round of the Cincinnati Open, held in Mason, Ohio, on Saturday.
The 19th-seeded Chwalinska, who made a memorable journey from qualifier to finalist in Paris, recorded her initial WTA 1000 win of the current season. Following the French Open, her Wimbledon campaign concluded in the first round due to a right ankle injury sustained during match point. She later returned to action in Toronto but was unable to advance past her opening match.
Reflecting on her journey, Chwalinska remarked, "Overall, I'm content with my recovery process, though it certainly involved its challenges and setbacks. It was undoubtedly frustrating at times, especially given the positive momentum I had built. However, that's the nature of tennis, of sports—it can be harsh. You must accept it and learn from the experience. I'm healthy now, thankful to be competing here, and striving to deliver my best tennis."
The match saw a total of eight service breaks, with Chwalinska successfully converting six of her eleven opportunities. Notably, she won 28 of Busca's 46 serves, achieving a striking 60.9% success rate on her opponent's serve.
Among the other ten matches featuring seeded players on the early schedule, only the 26th-seeded Latvian Jelena Ostapenko faced defeat, succumbing to another Polish player, Magdalena Frech, with a score of 6-1, 6-3. Frech broke Ostapenko's serve three consecutive times in the first set and twice in the second.
Meanwhile, the ascending Philippine talent Alexandra Eala, after dropping the initial game against Romania's Elena-Gabriela Ruse, impressively rallied to secure nine consecutive games (6-1, 3-0, retired) before Ruse was forced to withdraw due to injury.
Eala shared her thoughts with the media, stating, "I believe I played effectively; I felt confident with the ball, maintained strong focus, and managed to stay in the zone, which I think I executed well." She added, "Naturally, no one desires a match to conclude with a retirement. First and foremost, I extend my best wishes to Gabriela Ruse for a swift recovery, as injuries are never pleasant. I hope she recuperates soon."
In other noteworthy contests, the third-seeded Jessica Pegula decisively defeated Switzerland's Simona Waltert 6-3, 6-2; the sixth-seeded Czech and Wimbledon champion Linda Noskova overcame England's Katie Boulter 6-3, 6-3; the ninth-seeded Amanda Anisimova ousted Turkey's Zeynep Sonmez 6-2, 6-3; the 14th-seeded Russian Diana Shnaider triumphed over Germany's Tatjana Maria 6-2, 7-5; the 15th-seeded Romanian Sorana Cirstea bested the Czech Republic's Nikola Bartunkova 7-6 (5), 6-3; the 18th-seeded Russian Anna Kalinskaya narrowly defeated Cincinnati native Caty McNally 6-3, 6-4; the 25th-seeded Emma Navarro staged a comeback against Ukraine's Anhelina Kalinina 3-6, 6-4, 6-2; and the 29th-seeded Maria Sakkari of Greece outlasted Uzbekistan's Kamilla Rakhimova 6-2, 5-7, 6-1.
In the only match involving two unseeded players, China's Shuai Zhang emerged victorious against Kayla Day with a score of 2-6, 6-2, 6-2. Three matches remained unfinished at the time of reporting.
