Team Penske's driver, David Malukas, has received medical authorization to participate in the Borchetta Bourbon Music City Grand Prix. This decision comes despite a considerable incident during the initial practice session at Nashville Superspeedway, where he sustained a significant knee bruise after a forceful impact with his car's steering wheel.
During the first practice session, approximately 20 minutes in, the 24-year-old Chicago native lost control of his #12 Team Penske Chevrolet in Turn 2. The vehicle subsequently half-spun and collided heavily with the outer wall. The severity of the impact was such that Malukas's knee struck the steering wheel, detaching it from the steering column. Following the crash, Malukas was transported to a local hospital for evaluation, missing the qualifying rounds. However, he returned to the track in time for Saturday evening's high-line and final practice sessions after medical examinations confirmed no severe injuries, only extensive bruising to his knee.
The incident also caused damage to the SAFER Barrier, leading to a prolonged halt in the session as track crews worked for over 20 minutes to repair the wall. This necessitated an extension of the practice session by 10 minutes by IndyCar officials. Despite the heavy impact, Malukas was able to exit his vehicle with assistance from the AMR Safety Team and walked away under his own power before heading to the hospital. He later expressed gratitude to the medical and track personnel for their swift response and thorough care.
Malukas shared his relief, stating, "Everything is good." He extended his appreciation to the AMR safety team, IndyCar staff, and the hospital team for their efficiency in conducting examinations under time constraints. He remarked on the surprising outcome that nothing was fractured or torn, especially given how his knee dislodged the steering wheel. He confirmed that with proper care, he was ready to compete.
